Stadtbegegnungen

The fusion of art, creativity, and our city brought together in the „Wir sprechen…“ project by space and place was progressive, exploratory, and deeply connective. I was particularly impressed by the focus on Meiselmarkt and the surrounding neighborhood in Vienna’s 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Within this context, I had the privilege of introducing curious passersby and neighbors to Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) for an hour—a visual language that deserves its place among Vienna’s rich tapestry of spoken languages.

Vienna boasts an extraordinary diversity of languages and dialects: Arabic, Bosnian, Serbian, Turkish, English, Polish, Hungarian, Farsi, Somali, Chechen, and so many more. When I learned about this city project, it was clear to me that Austrian Sign Language had to be included.

I especially appreciated the thoughtful efforts by the space and place team to properly label my language station on-site. Too often, signage simply states „Sign Language“ without providing context. As someone deeply rooted in Deaf culture and the community, proper recognition of ÖGS is close to my heart. I was thrilled to see the announcement explicitly highlight Austrian Sign Language.

I wasn’t alone in showcasing a native language at this event. Many visitors took the opportunity to participate in crash courses, learning the mother tongues of their neighbors and fellow residents. This experience allowed them to connect with new people, exchange ideas, and appreciate one another’s unique abilities. Austrian Sign Language held a special fascination for many. As a Deaf individual, I see sharing this language as a cultural mission, and it brought me great joy to do so.

Beyond practicing signs, the warm interactions with people—who felt unfamiliar at first but quickly became less so—warmed us on a chilly autumn day. Mutual learning is a priceless gift. The active participation and genuine interest of the attendees made the 60 minutes fly by, leaving me deeply grateful as a trainer.
